If you are an aficionado of Nikon will undoubtably be aware that two of their recent failings have been video and mirrorless. Both these technologies have have made big inroads into the photographic world in recent years. Canon made their mark in video with the EOS 5D II being rapidly adopted by film makers looking for the cinematic look. In recent years Canon have lost a lot of ground to Panasonic and Sony, both of whom have superior 4K video cameras. In the 4K arena Nikon are very far from the front.
The same might be said of their mirrorless technology. The most recent offering the Nikon 1 J5 was a half hearted effort that offered an utterly pointless 4K at 15 frames per second. Contrast this to offerings by Panasonic and Sony such as the now replaced GH4 and the J5 looks poor indeed.
A New Nikon Mirrorless
Recently rumours have been swirling around Nikon producing a new mirrorless camera. These rumours were all but confirmed in a statement to DPReview yesterday The statement is very vague and there is the suggestion that this might not be a pure Nikon camera. The issue is, that Nikon are in danger of doing a Kodak. They have failed to recognise the importance of mirrorless cameras and in particular video capabilities of mirrorless cameras. Will producing just one mirrorless help then gain a foothold in this market? I fear not. In my opinion they need a range of cameras to suit different levels.
They need to combine their famed ergonomics with modern technologies such as 4K 60p. They also need to make their new mirrorless appeal to their DSLR market. Any compromise in their specification is going to leave them well behind in the market. For a company that is already struggling, that could be the death knell.
